DENVER, Colo. – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to the Denver Pioneers in game two of the two-game series. With the loss, the 'Nooks fall to 11-9-2 on the season.
Denver pulled away with a 7-2 win, using three first-period goals and four third-period goals. The 'Nooks stayed within two goals after the first before DU pulled away late. Justin Lee started the scoring 2:39 into the game, making it 1-0 off a pass from Rieger Lorenz. The Nanooks responded just under two and a half minutes later as
Payton Matsui tallied his second goal of the season.
Chase Dubois and
Anton Rubtsov earned the assists. It took only 1:03 for the Pioneers to regain the lead on a Massimo Rizzo goal. Jack Devine added another 12:37 into the first making it 3-1 after the opening 20 minutes.
In the second, the two teams skated to a 0-0 period with each side killing a pair of power plays.
Matt Radomsky, the 'Nooks netminder, stopped all six shots-on-goal during the second. McKade Webster tallied the second power-play goal of the night for Denver, making it 4-1, but Matsui pulled the Nanooks back within two with his second of the night.
Brady Risk and
Arvils Bergmanis earned the assists on Matsui's second goal. Jared Wright, Carter Mazur and Carter King tallied the final three goals for Denver in the final 7:55, making it a 7-2 final.
The Nanooks are off until Jan. 27 when they travel to Anchorage for the fifth game of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup and return home the following night on Jan. 28.
