FAIRBANKS - The Alaska hockey team hoisted the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup for the 12th-straight time tonight in Fairbanks. Despite the Cup being decided in December, the Seawolves gave the 'Nooks a run for their money, but Alaska rallied late to grab their second-consecutive 4-3 OT win over UAA.
With the win, the Nanooks improve to 13-9-2 on the season.
Power-play goals were a hot topic in game six of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup as five of the seven goals came on the man-advantage. The first goal of the game, however, did not. Matt Johnson needed only 2:35 to get UAA on the board in the first, taking a pass from William Gilson and beating Nanooks' netminder
Matt Radomsky. Just over three minutes later while on the power play, the Nanooks tied the game at 1-1 on
Chase Dubois' first of the night.
Arvils Bergmanis played the puck to
Payton Matsui who then found Dubois for the one-timer and goal.
The 1-1 tie stuck through to the third with Radomsky stopping all four shots-on-goal in the second. Early in the third, UAA tallied two goals, making it 3-1. It took only 39 seconds into the third for UAA to regain the lead. This time it was Gilson scoring, taking a pass from Ben Almquist and Brett Bamber. Nearly six minutes later, Connor Marritt added on, making it 3-1 Seawolves. Almquist and Gilson were awarded the assists on their third goal.
Almost 10 minutes later, the Nanooks went on a five-minute major for a UAA kneeing penalty. This opened the door for Alaska and gave them the time and opportunity they were in search of. 15:26 into the third, Dubois tallied his second goal.
Matt Koethe played the puck to
Payton Matsui; after a Matsui shot, Dubois found the rebound and pulled the 'Nooks within one at 3-2 UAA. Only 30 seconds later, while still on the major,
Anton Rubtsov put a one-timer into the back of the net as Dubois played the puck to Matsui before finding Rubtsov for the goal.
Down the stretch, the Nanooks were hit with a holding penalty on Bergmanis with 1:20 left, giving UAA one last power-play opportunity to end regulation and begin overtime. The 'Nooks managed to kill it and right after killing the holding call, took the puck into the attacking zone. After
Markuss Komuls played the puck to
Harrison Israels, he centered the puck to a streaking
Brady Risk who slotted the winner home only 58 seconds into the overtime period sending the Carlson Center into a frenzy.
The Nanooks welcome Arizona State next weekend on Feb. 3-4.
