Nanooks Storm Back to Grab Thrilling OT Win Over Anchorage

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team left the Seawolf Sports Complex and Alaska Anchorage fans stunned by grabbing a huge comeback victory in overtime to win their fifth-straight win over the Seawolves. With the win, the Nanooks move to 12-9-2 and dropped UAA to 4-15-0.

After falling behind 2-0 through the first two periods, the Nanooks used a three-goal third period and extra-time tally to walk away with a 4-3 win on Friday, Jan. 27. Alex Gomez of UAA got the goal scoring started 8:39 into the first period, giving the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead. Carson Kosobud and Matt Johnson were awarded the assists. The 1-0 lead stood after the first with Nanooks' netminder Matt Radomsky stopping four shots while allowing the lone-goal in the first. 5:20 into the second, the Seawolves struck again. This time it was Matt Allen from Jamie Collins and Nolan Kent.

Arvils Bergmanis got the 'Nooks on the board 9:10. After Jonny Sorenson found Harrison Israels, he dropped the puck to Bergmanis who put the puck past Nolan Kent in net, making it 2-1 UAA with just over 10 minutes to play. It took only 2:58 for the Nanooks to find their first equalizer as 12:08 into the third Brady Risk tallied the 2-2 goal from the left of the net. Kyle Gaffney and Garrett Pyke found Risk who beat Kent on the one-timer to tie it at a pair each. Nearly three minutes later, UAA struck again, taking a 3-2 lead with 5:08 remaining. Conor Cole and Brandon Lajoie played the puck to Allen for his second goal of the night. Nearly five minutes went by with some opportunities on both ends, but with an empty-net, the Nanooks miraculous third period continued. This time it was Jonny Sorenson from the slot. T.J. Lloyd played the puck to Risk, who then found Sorenson posted in the slot - he put the shot past Kent and made it 3-3, forcing an overtime period.

In the overtime period, the Seawolves held possession to start but 2:13 into the 3-on-3 extra time, Payton Matsui won it for the Nanooks. A.J. Macaulay was awarded the assist and the 'Nooks are coming home with a 4-3 OT win.

The 'Nooks currently hold a 5-0-0 advantage in the 2022-23 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup; following tomorrow's game the Nanooks will be awarded the cup for the 12th-straight season. Come out to the Carlson Center for a 7:07 p.m. puck-drop featuring a ceremonial puck-drop from Nanooks men's basketball legend, Brad Oleson, and the singing of the Alaska Song.
