MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Western Oregon Wolves on Saturday, Jan. 21. The 81-67 loss drops the Nanooks to 4-12, 1-8 GNAC this season.
Alaska jumped out to an early lead after the first quarter, but a big 30-16 second quarter by WOU put the 'Nooks down for a remainder of the game. They battled in the third and outscored the Wolves in the fourth but the deficit was too much to overcome. WOU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead but
Emma McKenney got the 'Nooks on the board with a three. After falling behind 12-3, the Nanooks ended the first on a 10-0 run in the final three minutes to take a 13-12 lead after one. In the second, the Nanooks and Wolves were tied at 15=15 in the first minute before WOU grabbed the lead. It quickly became an eight-point deficit at 26-18 before
Emma Wass stopped the run with a free throw.
Sam Tolliver followed with one of her own but WOU answered with a three making it 29-20. Their lead reached as much as 15 before
Kayla Johnson made it a 13-point deficit going into the halftime break.
In the third, WOU stretched their lead to 18 in the opening two and a half minutes. A Johnson jumper and
Destiny Reimers layup pulled Alaska within 13 with six minutes remaining in the quarter but the deficit reached 19 and eventually was 17 to start the fourth after
Ellen Silva hit a jumper with eight seconds remaining in the third. With 4:50 remaining in regulation the 'Nooks used another Reimers bucket to cut the WOU lead to 10. Unfortunately, that was as close as they came. The Wolves ran their lead back out to 16 before finishing with the 14-point win.
Sam Tolliver led the way with 17 points. She went 8-10 from the free-throw line, grabbed four rebounds, picked up three steals, dished an assist and blocked a shot.
Kayla Johnson ended with 12 points and six rebounds. Reimers just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds and
Ellen Silva ended with 10 points and seven boards.
