FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball program has announced the signing of Tyler Mrus (MER-us), a 6'6" small forward from Seattle, Wash. Mrus, an incoming freshman, played his high school ball at Seattle Prep and will join the 'Nooks for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
"We are very excited that Tyler Mrus decided to come to the University of Alaska Fairbanks," said head coach Greg Sparling, "Tyler had a great career at Seattle Prep, playing for Coach Michael Kelly. He excelled in the classroom and also on the court. We're confident that he will carry over with his tremendous work ethic on and off the court. He will play multiple positions for us in the upcoming 22-23 season. We'd also like to thank everyone involved at the university who made Tyler and his father, Thomas, feel so welcome while on their visit."
Mrus played a big part in Seattle Prep's 2021-22 success as the small forward led them to a third-place finish at the 3A Washington State Basketball Championships and 22-7 overall record.Â
As a senior, Mrus averaged 17.9 points per game while shooting 53% from the field, 85% from the free-throw line and grabbed 5.6 rebounds per game. He added 1.75 assists per game and 1.25 steals per game while earning SBLive Second-Team All-State honors and an All-Tournament Team selection at the 2022 State Tournament.Â
