SEATTLE, Wash. -Â The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball season came to an end at the 2022 GNAC Championships at Seattle Pacific University. In the GNAC Championships Play-In game, the Falcons defeated Alaska 48-78 ending the 'Nooks' season at 3-20, 2-15 GNAC.
Seattle Pacific opened the scoring off of a block on the defensive end. They pushed their lead to 0-4 before the Nanooks got on the board on aÂ
Paola Perez-Mendoza layup. She followed up with another make, pulling the blue and gold within one at 4-5. SPU quickly scored six-straight, extending their lead to 4-11 beforeÂ
Zosha Krupa broke the run, making it 6-11 Falcons. To end the first,Â
Caitlin Pusich got the 'Nooks to double-digits, hitting a jumper with 20 seconds remaining to make it a 10-21 deficit following the first.Â
Entering the second, SPU's lead grew to 18 as they scored the first seven points of the quarter. After trading buckets, aÂ
Claudia Diez Marti three-pointer pulled Alaska back within 14 at the 5:20 mark. Unfortunately, SPU's lead grew back to 19 heading into the locker room at halftime. Out of the break, Seattle Pacific's lead continued to grow.Â
Ellen Silva got the 'Nooks' scoring started in the second half with a jumper in the paint, making it 22-48 SPU. For the third-straight quarter, the Nanooks managed only 10 points, entering the fourth down 30-62.Â
Alaska capitalized on opportunities in the fourth quarter, outscoring SPU 18-16, however, it was too late. Krupa opened the Nanooks' scoring in the final quarter, making it 32-65.Â
Destiny Reimers followed with seven-straight points. AÂ
Claudia Diez Marti layup pulled the deficit under 30 with a three-point play, making it 47-74 with 2:07 remaining. Another Diez Marti free-throw ended the scoring for Alaska, as they fell to the Falcons 48-78.Â
Diez Marti ended the night as the high-scorer for Alaska, finishing the night with 14 points. She went 5-7 from the free-throw line while making four field goals and one three. She added three assists and one rebound to lead the way for the Nanooks.Â
Paola Perez-Mendoza was the only other Nanook in double-digits, posting 11 points on 3-7 shooting and 5-6 on trips to the free-throw line. She tallied four steals and rebounds and added three assists.Â
This loss wraps up the Nanooks' season.
