FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks dropped their second-straight game to the Central Washington Wildcats on Wednesday, Feb. 2. They fell to CWU 67-52.
The Nanooks battled with the Wildcats early before trailing by eight at the halftime break. The Wildcats used an 18-11 third-quarter advantage to pull away enough before both sides scored 12 in the fourth quarter. CWU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Nanooks were on the board.
Ellen Silva scored two of her 15 to open the Alaska scoring run. On an
Emma Wass bucket, the Nanooks tied the game at 7-7. The two traded the next few buckets before CWU went ahead 16-10. Alaska picked up two more buckets before trailing by five after one.
In the second, the Wildcats quickly jumped ahead by nine with eight minutes remaining. Alaska stayed in striking distance, crawling back within two off of a
Destiny Reimers jumper. After falling behind by four,
Pearle Green made it a two-point game, once again, on a jumper, but that was as close as they'd get before the break. CWU pushed out to an eight-point lead after the opening quarters.
Out of the locker room, Central quickly made it an 18-point deficit for Alaska, going on a 14-4 run to make it 51-33. A
Claudia Diez Marti jumper cut it to 55-40, but the 'Nooks had an uphill battle remaining in the fourth. Unfortunately, a 31.25 shooting percentage in the fourth wasn't enough, even with CWU shooting 17.65% from the field in the fourth.
Central pulled away and took the win by 15 over the Nanooks. These two teams will square off again, tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 3 at 5:15 p.m. before the men's basketball team takes on Western Washington in a double-header.
Ellen Silva was the high-scorer for the Nanooks, posting 15 points on 7-12 shooting. She also grabbed nine rebounds, nearly completing her first double-double.
Pearle Green added 10 points and five rebounds while shooting 4-12 FG and 2-6 3PT.
