SOUTH BEND, Indiana – The Nanooks hockey team defeated the #19/17 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, Dec. 31 behind a two-goal night from
Chase Dubois. With the 3-2 win, the Nanooks improved to 10-7-2 on the season.
"Tonight, was a great team win." Said head coach
Erik Largen, "Tomorrow we need to be even better, so we give ourselves a chance against a great Notre Dame team."
Dubois got the scoring started 7:28 into the first period. He stole the puck from a Notre Dame skater and had a breakaway, beating ND netminder, Ryan Bischel, to make it a 1-0 Nanooks lead. The 1-0 lead stood through the first as
Matt Radomsky stopped all six shots-on-goal in the opening 20 minutes. Alaska also killed Notre Dame's one power-play opportunity in the first. It took only 2:17 into the second for Dubois to strike again, this time off a rebound of a
Payton Matsui shot.
Braden Birnie played the puck into the zone and off the dump-and-chase, played the puck behind the ND net before finding Matsui for the shot in front, but he found Dubois on the backhand to make it 2-0 Alaska.
Karl Falk tallied the game-winner with 1:04 left in the second period from just inside the blue line.
Connor Mylymok played the puck from
Xavier Jean-Louis and took it behind the net before finding Falk. He then put the puck on net and snuck it through Bischel making it 3-0 Nanooks heading to the third period.
Notre Dame managed to pull within one with two third-period goals. Hunter Strand beat Radomsky 2:37 into the third and Chayse Primeau pulled the Irish within one 10:47 into the final period but Radomsky managed to shut the door late, stopping 17 shots in the third.
On the night, Radomsky made 32 saves on 34 shots for a 94.1 save percentage.
Six Nanooks tallied a point in the game one victory – these two teams will meet again tomorrow on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. AKT.
