'Nooks Head to Holiday Break Riding Win Streak

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team moved to 6-4, 1-1 with a 104-43 win over Portland Bible College. This win ends the 'Nooks 2022 home schedule and non-conference schedule.

The Nanooks held PBC to a 27.8 field-goal percentage while shooting 59.4% from the floor. They complimented that with a 52.6 three-point percentage while PBC only made five threes on the night. Alaska jumped out to an early 11-0 lead before the Arrows got on the board with 15:43 on the clock. Bryan Nguyen answered with a three-pointer and Mawich Kachjaani knocked down a pair of free throws, his first points of the season. Nguyen and Kachjaani answered again with another three and a Kachjaani layup, extending the lead to 21-4 Nanooks. With 8:52 remaining, the lead reached 30 on a Jaycson Bereal, Jr. jumper. This jumper made it 42-11.

The lead then hit 40 on a dunk by Kachjaani off a Nguyen steal and the 'Nooks took a 64-21 lead into the halftime break.

Out of the locker room, the Nanooks put up six quick points making it 70-21. Soon it was a 50-point lead at 74-23 on a Paul Johnson three, one of his three on the day. PBC pulled back within 46 at the 8:56 mark on a Matt Pereira three, but the Nanooks kept answering and eventually stretched their lead to 60 on a Bereal fastbreak bucket off an Isaac Garcia steal and dish.

PBC ended on a four-point run, hitting four free throws to make it a final score of 104-43 in favor of Alaska.

Tyler Mrus led the 'Nooks with 19 points on 9-12 shooting. He added four rebounds, a block and an assist. Nguyen added 17, Bereal and Johnson ended with 15, Kachjaani ended with 12 and 12 rebounds for a double-double in his first game back and Tybenn Sturm posted 10.
