UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – The Nanooks hockey team was swept by #7/7 Penn State on Wednesday, Nov. 23 in Pegula Ice Arena. Despite scoring first, the 'Nooks fell 2-1 to PSU, falling to 5-7-2 on the year.
Anton Rubtsov got the scoring started 12:41 into the opening period. After playing the puck from
Brady Risk and
Payton Matsui, Rubtsov skated behind the Penn State net before cutting back above the goal line and finding the back of the net for an early Nanooks' lead. That lead lasted exactly four minutes before Penn State found the equalizer. Ryan Kirwan scored his second goal against Alaska this weekend off a rebound from a Jimmy Dowd, Jr. shot from the point. Following Dowd, Jr.'s shot, Connor McMenamin got his stick on the puck, pushing it to the right of the crease where Kirwan was for the rebound.
After his equalizer, the score stayed 1-1 until 9:12 into the third period. Ben Schoen scored the game-winner for Penn State. Ture Linden first put a shot on the net but
Matt Radomsky made the save. After Christian Sarlo poked at the puck, Schoen put the loose puck in the crease into the back of the net, making it 2-1 PSU with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Both Nittany Lions goals came while on the power play. The Nanooks ended the night 0-1 on the man-advantage and 1-3 on the penalty kill.
Radomsky ended the night with 34 saves, recording a .944 save percentage.
