TROY, New York – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team tied in the final game of their two-game series with the RPI Engineers. The 3-3 tie moves the 'Nooks to 5-5-2 on the year.
Garrett Pyke got the scoring started for the Nanooks 14:54 into the first. The blueliner played the puck from the point out to the goalies left and thread the needle through traffic, beating RPI netminder, Jack Watson top-shelf. Pyke's goal started a string of three unassisted goals by the Nanooks in the game. The second goal of the game came in the second period; this time it was
Jonny Sorenson on a breakaway while shorthanded. Sorenson, in open space, put the moves on Watson before going top-shelf on him, making it 2-0 Nanooks 13:20 into the middle stanza.
Alaska quickly grew their lead to 3-0 only 28 seconds into the third.
Anton Rubtsov played the puck near the faceoff circle to the left of the RPI netminder; he then brought the puck in near the crease before putting the shot in from the right side, beating Watson for the third time. That was the all the 'Nooks put up as RPI began their comeback. 3:42 into the third, while on the power play, the Engineers posted their first goal as Ryan Mahshie found the back of the net making it 3-1 Alaska. 12 minutes later, RPI capitalized on a five-minute major penalty on
Connor Mylymok, scoring the second of the period and cutting the lead to one.
1:34 later, RPI tied the game at 3-3, sending the game to overtime where the game eventually ended as an eventual tie. RPI won the shootout as the 'Nooks went 0-3.
Matt Radomsky ended the night with 22 saves.
