FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks rifle team defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers for a second-straight day, using a 4740 aggregate score to defeat Nebraska's 4726 aggregate.

"Today was a brilliant match I thought. The score total score wasn't as reflective of that as it should've been, but I was really pleased with the performance." Said head coach Will Anti on his team's performance today, "The team had a great energy, they made smart choices throughout the day and really showed a lot of maturity. This is probably the most satisfying match so far because I really felt like the areas that need work were clear and some of the areas they have been paying attention to paid off."

Seven Nanooks finished in the top-10 individual aggregate scores, and it was Kellen McAferty leading the way. He posted an 1187 with Peter Fiori following in second-place with an 1186. Marina Gonzalez Mazo shot an 1185, taking third-place in the individual standings. Rylan Kissell rounded out the top-five finishes for Alaska, taking fourth with an aggregate of 1185. Nebraska's Tori Watts took fifth, shooting an 1185 before Rachael Charles and Sára Karasová who took sixth and seventh. Gavin Barnick was the final Nanook in the top-10, finishing ninth.

In smallbore, the Nanooks outshot Nebraska 2356-2345 with Marina Gonzalez Mazo leading the way with a 593. Peter Fiori followed with a 592 in second. Cecelia Ossi of Nebraska took third, breaking up the Nanooks' scorers with a 592 smallbore score. Kellen McAferty took fourth with a 590, Rachael Charles took fifth with a 588 and Karasová took sixth with a 588 of her own. Kissell took eighth with a score of 586, Barnick took 10thwith a score of 585 and Tobias Bernhoft-Osa rounded out the Nanooks shooters in smallbore, taking 12th with a score of 579. Anti added on about how pleased he was with Gonzalez Mazo's smallbore performance, "Marina shot two PRs today and won smallbore. It was a great performance and very controlled. She is gaining more and more confidence in her ability to put together good performances. We were blown away with her smallbore and her poise in standing as she closed her match."

In air rifle, Rylan Kissell led the way, posting a 599 for a first-place finish in air. "Rylan had a phenomenal air day with a lot of depth. I liked his approach to it, he's finding ways to keep it exciting which actually is tough when you are shooting at that level consistently. It is hard to conjure that level of intensity for an integer college match." Said Anti. Tori Watts and Emma Rhode of Nebraska took second and third before the next Nanook, Kellen McAferty. McAferty took fourth, posting a 597. Peter Fiori took sixth, firing a 594. Charles, Karasová and Barnick all, in that order, shot a 594, taking seventh, eighth and ninth. Gonzalez Mazo shot a 592, taking 10th in the air rifle standings and Bernhoft-Osa rounded out the 'Nooks shooters with a 12th-place finish with a 591.

At the end of the day, the Nanooks coach was very pleased with the shooting on Sunday morning, "I'm proud of the depth the group showed. All the team members shot above 590 in air, that's a first and very exciting. Air is certainly moving in the right direction. Finally, a big congrats to UNL on a school-record today. It was fun to have a range full of good performances!"

The Nanooks will not shoot again until the new year when they open 2023 at home against West Virginia on Friday, Jan. 23, 2023.
