Rifle Welcomes #6-Ranked Nebraska for Two Matches this Weekend

FAIRBANKS – The #4-ranked Alaska Nanooks rifle team is back in action at home this weekend as they host the #6-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are fresh off of a third-place finish at The Fall Classic, hosted by West Virginia. On day one, the Nanooks fired a 2351 in smallbore as sophomore Sára Karasová led the field, shooting a 592 in the smallbore discipline. On day two, the Nanooks shot a 2374 in air rifle, completing their aggregate score of 4725. TCU won the Fall Classic with an aggregate of 4737, West Virginia took second with a 4733 and Kentucky took fourth, firing a 4705.

The Alaska Nanooks check in at #4 in the most current CRCA rankings (11/8/22). Ole Miss took over the top-spot with TCU and West Virginia coming in at #2 and #3.

  • Rylan Kissell leads the Nanooks this season in aggregate average. The sophomore is averaging an 1187.25 aggregate score on the 22-23 season. 
  • Two other Nanooks are averaging 1185 aggregate scores this season. Karasová is shooting an average aggregate of 1186.4 while Peter Fiori is shooting an average of 1185.4.
  • Kellen McAferty and Gavin Barnick are averaging 1184.5 and 1180.2 on the season in aggregate scoring. 
  • Fiori shot the best individual score in the NCAA this season, posting an 1195 on Nov. 2 at The Citadel. He fired a 597 in smallbore and 598 in air. His 597 in smallbore tied the NCAA record.
  • Kissell shot the second-best score of the season by the Nanooks, posting an 1192 aggregate score on Nov. 3 at The Citadel. 
  • Fiori shot the only other 1190+ score this season, posting an 1191 on Oct. 7.
What's to Come
After this weekend's matchup with Nebraska, the Nanooks will not shoot until 2023. On Jan. 13, the 'Nooks will begin the second half of their season with West Virginia. The following day, Jan. 14, the Nanooks will host GSU, Kentucky and WVU for a four-team match at TVSA.  The Nanooks will then head to Air Force on Jan. 21-22, 2023 to end their regular-season before the PRC Championships in Fairbanks on Feb. 4-5, 2023. 
 
Following the conference championships, Alaska will head to UTEP for their NCAA Qualifier and then the NCAA Rifle Championships on Mar. 10-11, 2023 in Akron, Ohio.
