ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team fell to the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday, Oct. 8. CWU took the win over Alaska in straight sets.
The first set was the closest of the three but resulted in a 25-22 CWU win. The Nanooks posted their best offensive attack percentage of the afternoon, hitting .216 with 13 kills, but the Wildcats posted 18 kills and had a hit percentage of .286. In the second, the Wildcats took the win 25-21, outhitting the Nanooks .194 to .081 before running away with a big third set win.
The first set began with shared runs up to the 8-7 mark. After pulling within one, the Nanooks pulled ahead 10-9 using a three-point stretch on two Ella Bines kills and a block by Kristina Head and Rilee White. CWU stopped the run, but Alaska picked up four more immediately after, moving ahead 14-10. Central put together a 4-0 run to tie the game at 14-14 before taking the lead at the 17-16 mark. The Nanooks were able to pull within one at 21-20, but CWU grabbed four of the final six points to take a 25-22 set one win.
Central jumped ahead early, making it 11-3 out of the gates. The Nanooks pushed back with three-straight, making it 11-6 on a pair of CWU errors and a Kristina Head ace. CWU doubled up Alaska with an 18-9 lead, but the Nanooks struck back with a run of 11-4, pulling within two at 22-20. In that run, the Nanooks saw help from all around. Johnasia Carr checked in with three kills and Elena Guc, Jessa Long and Rilee White checked in with kills of their own. Despite pulling within a pair, the Wildcats grabbed three of the next four points, taking the set win 25-21.
CWU used the momentum and ran away with a big third set, winning it 25-4 to sweep the Nanooks.
Johnasia Michelle Carr led the Nanooks with seven kills and a .467 hit percentage. Ella Bines and Rilee White ended the day with five kills. Taylor Overn ended the day with 11 assists and Jessa Long finished with a team-high 13 digs.
The Nanooks welcome the Montana State Billings Yellow Jackets and Seattle Pacific Falcons next week on Thursday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 15.
