Nanooks Fall to Chaminade in Five to End Hawaii Trip

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Alaska Nanook volleyball team dropped their final game in Hawaii to Chaminade, losing in five-sets for the second time in as many days. After jumping ahead 2-1 in total sets, the Nanooks fell in a hard-fought match, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 11-15. This drops Alaska to 2-2 on the season.

Despite being outhit by the Swords 53-65 in all five sets and 13-16 in the first set, the Nanooks were able to snag set one, 25-21. Fairbanks' three errors to Chaminade's seven proved to be the difference as the 'Nooks had a swing percentage of .244 to Chaminade's .200. In the second set, the Swords came back and outhit the Nanooks 9-14 and grabbed the second set win 19-25. Alaska rebounded and took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-22 third set win before Chaminade closed out the Nanooks with 22-25 and 11-15 set wins.

In set number one, the Swords jumped out to an early 2-4 lead behind two service-errors by the Nanooks. Despite the unforced errors, Alaska pushed back for four consecutive points, grabbing a 6-4 lead. Kills from Sophie Schilling, Cate Whiting and Elizabeth Jackson eventually pushed the lead to 10-7. Chaminade made a small run of their own, tying the game at 11-11 but Alaska had an answer. They went on to snag six of the next seven points, pushing their lead to 17-12. Another small run from Chaminade pushed the score to 21-20 but the 'Nooks scored four of the final five to go up 1-0. Set two saw Chaminade run away early, despite a strong comeback attempt from Alaska.

After falling behind 5-11, the Nanooks pushed back to 8-12, however, that was as close as they'd get. Chaminade pushed the lead to 13-22 and won set two, 19-25.

Set three saw the 'Nooks go head-to-head with the Swords. They battled their way back numerous times, going point-for-point and run-for-run with Chaminade. After the Swords pulled ahead, 9-11, the Nanooks strung together five-straight points, making it 14-11 on two AveRee Reynolds kills and a Karli Nielson kill. After their run made it 17-13, Chaminade answered, taking the lead back at 21-22. Sophie Schilling and Nielson didn't back down as the sophomore-junior duo tallied a kill a piece and helped grab the set three victory.

Unfortunately, despite an 8-1 lead to start the fourth set, the Nanooks could not grab the victory. Chaminade chipped away at the early lead and eventually pulled ahead with the help of a five and six point run. At the end of the six-point run, they had the lead, 19-20. The 'Nooks battled to tie it at 20-20 but Chaminade ran away with a 22-25 set-four win.

The fifth-set and final set in Hawaii spelled the end for Alaska and their run to beat Chaminade. After taking the lead at 5-4 with a Rilee White service-ace, the Swords took the lead back heading into the side-change. A four-point run and six of the next seven points led to a 6-10 lead for the Swords. Alaska made one final push, but kills from Emily Moorhead, Reynolds and White was not enough as Chaminade won the set and match, 11-15 and 2-3.

Rilee White and Sophie Schilling led the way for the Nanooks as White posted 11 kills and a .211 hit percentage while Schilling added 10 kills and a .261 hit percentage. Schilling added four blocks while Moorhead led the way in blocks with seven. Reynolds added five blocks alongside her nine kills. Cate Whiting had another solid night with 39 assists and 14 digs while Dani Dodge led he dig-category with 19.

The Nanooks return to Alaska and will head to Anchorage from Sept. 2-4 for the Seawolf Classic.
