Miller Posts Seven Kills on Senior Day; Volleyball Falls in Finale to Anchorage

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanook volleyball team finished up their final game of the revised 2020-21 season on Saturday, Apr. 17, 2021. They fell to the Anchorage Seawolves in straight sets, ending the year with a 5-6, 0-0 GNAC record.

UAA powered through the 'Nooks in three, taking the first set, 20-25. The second set was the same score, 20-25, before the Seawolves ran away with the victory, 13-25 in the final set.

The Nanooks kicked-off the day-game with a senior send-off for outside hitter, Markie Miller. Miller, in her fourth season with the Nanooks, led the day on her senior day with seven kills to her name. She also added a .385 hit percentage, one block and a dig in her final game in the blue and gold.

Despite the sweep, the Nanooks never went away. In set one, after back-and-forth points made it 4-5, UAA, the 'Nooks tallied two in response, taking back the lead. The Seawolves made it 6-7, but Alaska found an answer. Cate Whiting took the serve and helped push across seven-consecutive points, making it 13-7 on kills from Emily Moorhead and Lahra Weber. Unfortunately, Anchorage took the advantage right back. They strung together a 7-18 run to end the first set.

In the second set, the Nanooks jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, eventually extending it to 6-2. Markie Miller and Moorhead tallied kills to open up the second. After making it a 9-6 game on a Rilee White kill, the Seawolves quickly responded with four straight points, making it 9-10. Karli Nielson picked up the next two kills for the 'Nooks, tying things at 11-11 but another UAA run made it 15-21. Alaska responded with three points before UAA put it away for good. The third and final set was unfortunately a quick one. After grabbing an early lead, the Nanooks could not push it past two, leading to a firestorm of UAA points. An 8-6 lead quickly became a 9-19 deficit after the Seawolves took 13 of 14 points. Miller, Moorhead and White picked up one more kill each, but UAA grabbed the victory, 13-25 and 0-3 for the match.

Miller led the way with seven kills while Emily Moorhead checked in with six and Lahra Weber added five. Cate Whiting led the way in the assists column for the 'Nooks with 21 and Dani Dodge locked-down the back row with 12 digs. Zoey Keene and Miller added the only blocks for Alaska.
