FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Coach Woods and the Gold team picked up the victory over Coach Scott and the Blue squad on Friday, March 5 in the annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage. Woods' team grabbed a four-set victory, including sets one, three and four.
Gold picked up the first-set victory, 29-27. After falling behind 3-5 at the beginning of the match, they turned it around and grabbed the lead following a 10-10 tie.
AveRee Reynolds took a pass from
Taylor Overn and picked up one of her 17 kills. After Blue and Gold went back and forth for most of the remaining match, Gold found themselves with a set point up 24-22. Blue had other ideas. A service-error and two
Lahra Weber kills gave Blue the lead after storming back late. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as the Gold squad turned it around and picked up the set-win off of a
Markie Miller kill followed by an attack-error by Blue.
Set two was all Blue. In quick fashion, Coach Scott's team hopped out to a 13-6 lead in a matter of minutes, never looking back. Weber led the way in set two for Team Blue, picking up five kills on seven total attacks.
Miya Ohms checked in with four and
Sophie Schilling added three.
Colleen File was a wall on the defensive side of the ball, collecting eight digs in the second set alone.
Blue and Gold entered set three all square at one. They remained toe-to-to all set. Blue jumped out to a 7-3 lead behind a Miller kill and service error on Gold. Woods' squad, however, turned it around quick, tying the set at 10-10 with another Reynolds kill. After falling behind 17-20, Gold was poised for one more big comeback, rallying back to grab eight of the final 10 points, picking up a 25-22 set victory.
The fourth and final set held the same storyline as the earlier sets. The two teams played very even, trading points and leads until the 20-20 mark. After a Schilling kill off of a
Cate Whiting pass, the Gold squad picked up five of the final six points.
Emily Moorhead closed it out with a kill, taking the final pass from Overn once again.
The final set scores went in the favor of Gold; 29-27, 12-25, 25-22 and 25-21.
The Blue squad was led on the offensive end by Schilling and Weber as the duo combined for 26 kills, 13 to each. Ohms was the next closest Blue member to double-digit kills, checking in with nine. Whiting and Keene added five and File connected for two. File and Keene both cracked 20 digs for Blue, with 28 and 22 respectively.
On the Gold side, Reynolds led the way offensively with 17 kills. Close behind was
Emily Moorhead who added 14 at the net. Moorhead also added five assisted blocks to her scorecard.
Markie Miller ended the night with nine kills,
Rilee White added six, Overn found five, Nielson checked-in with four and Eden Murchinson added one.
Karli Nielson and
Dani Dodge each found 20-plus digs, Nielson with 23 and Dodge with 20. White had 15 and Miller picked-up 14.
