SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Alaska Nanook swim team picked up a head-to-head win and loss in their tri-meet on Saturday, Mar. 27, 2021 at Westmont College. The Nanooks picked up a win against Westmont, 106.5-79.5 before dropping their head-to-head meet with Loyola Marymount, 70-116.
After day one consisted of 11 events, the Nanooks, Warriors and Lions competed in 10 for their tri-meet. Event one was the 200-yard medley relay and was won by the 'Nooks. A team consisting of
Erika Kakazu,
Whitney McArthur,
Oda Bygdnes and
Lainey Lioi won with a time of 1:53.31, knocking-off LMU by .45 of a second.
Shannon McCallum grabbed the top Alaska finish in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing sixth with a time of 2:08.05.
The third event saw Kakazu battle for a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing the finals with a time of 1:04.81. In the fourth event, the 100-yard backstroke, the Nanooks took fourth, fifth and sixth with
Caroline McCormick,
Tori Shoemaker and
Taryn Aho. They posted times of 1:17.19, 1:19.45 and 1:19.73 respectively.
Whitney McArthur was the top-finisher for the 'Nooks in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing fifth with a finals time of 26.10.
Oda Bygdnes continued her dominance in the 100-yard freestyle, taking the top spot with a finals time of 54.83.
Tori Shoemaker was the top-finisher in the 500-yard freestyle for the Nanooks, finishing in third with a finals time of 5:37.67. Bygdnes grabbed another top-finish, this time in the 100-yard butterfly with the only sub-minute time of 59.66. The second-to-last event was the 400-yard IM.
Shannon McCallum was the only Nanook to crack the top-five, finishing fourth with a time of 5:00.74.
In the final event, the 'Nooks 200-yard freestyle team, consisting of; Bygdnes, McCallum, Lioi and McArthur picked up a second place finish, posting a time of 1:46.11.
