Volleyball Heads to Anchorage for Rivalry Matchup with Seawolves

ANCHORAGE – One of the best rivalries around takes place this Saturday as the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team travels to Anchorage for their first matchup with the Seawolves this season.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of a two-game sweep at home against Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington. In the NNU matchup, the 'Nooks swept the Nighthawks, 3-0 behind 10 kills from AveRee Reynolds and nine from Karli Nielson and Sophie Schilling. Cate Whiting added 29 assists and Dani Dodge led the way with 12 digs.
 
In their upset-win over the #25 Central Washington Wildcats, the Nanooks were led by career-days from Schilling, Nielson and Miya Ohms. Schilling posted a game-high 19 kills while Nielson followed with 18. Miya Ohms had 21 digs while Cate Whiting posted a 50-piece in the assists column with 55.
 
Top-Three
The Nanooks and their 6-2 GNAC record find themselves in third place in the GNAC standings, trailing only Anchorage (7-0) and Western Washington (5-1). 
 
Home Sweet Home
The Nanooks are 7-1 in matches played at the Patty Center. 
 
Team Totals
Emily Moorhead finds herself 20th in the nation with an average of 1.21 blocks per set. She is also sixth in the nation for total blocks with 82. Just behind her in total blocks is Sophie Schilling with 78, putting her in eighth. AveRee Reynolds checked-in the top-20 at 18th with 72 of her own blocks. Finally, Cate Whiting is second in the nation with 731 assists. 
 
Rivalry Time
The Nanooks have won three of the last seven matchups with UAA, including their first win in Anchorage in over a decade, last season on Mar. 27, 2021 in a five-set victory. Anchorage has taken the last two, beating the 'Nooks on their home court on Apr. 16-17, 1-3 and 0-3. 
 
Alaska as a team is the nation's leader in blocks, recording a total of 190.5 on the season. They're also sixth for total attacks (2,782), fifth in team kills (963), sixth in blocks per set (2.54), 12th in team digs (1,233), 20thin service-aces (133) and third in team assists (892).
