OMAHA, Neb. – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to Omaha on Friday, October 15 in overtime, pushing the Mavericks, but losing 2-3. This loss drops the Nanooks to 1-2-0 on the season. The two will face again on Sunday, Oct. 17.
After falling behind 0-2 early, the Nanooks stormed back to force overtime. Behind goals from
Roberts Kalkis and
Brady Risk, the Nanooks tied it up late in the second period before falling in a 3-on-3 style overtime. Taylor Ward started the scoring, taking passes from Brandon Scanlin and Kevin Conley, while on the power-play, and found the back of the net for the first of the night. Less than four minutes later, Omaha struck again. This time it was Jack Randl, taking passes from Nate Knoepke and Joey Abate.
The Nanooks trailed 0-2 after one, but the fight didn't end there.
Roberts Kalkis took an unassisted puck and found the back of the net from just inside the face-off circle to the left of Omaha's net. This pulled the Nanooks within one and pushed the momentum to Alaska. Over 12 minutes later, with only seconds left on the clock,
Brady Risk struck gold as
Filip Fornaa Svensson took an up-ice pass from
Antti Virtanen. After Fornaa Svensson's shot was saved, the rebound fell on Risk's stick and the freshman knotted the game up at 2-2 with five seconds remaining in the second.
Nobody went on to score in the third, pushing the game to overtime.
Gustavs Davis Grigals came up with a few big saves during the five-minute extra time, but off of a faceoff, Omaha won it with a faceoff win followed by a quick shot, sneaking it past the Alaska netminder.
This loss moves Alaska to 1-2-0 on the season. The same two teams meet again on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1:07 p.m. AKT before Alaska continues their road trip to New York for meetings with Clarkson and Cornell.
Risk ended the night with one point on his goal. Kalkis, Fornaa Svensson and Virtanen also picked up points. Grigals ended the night with 24 saves in 62:16 minutes in net.
