@NanooksVB Earns USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky.
– On Monday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released the 2019-20 United States Marine Corps/AVCA Team Academic awards, in which the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team continued to be recognized for their academic efforts last season.

In order to be recognized by the AVCA, each team had to have maintained a year-long team GPA of 3.30 or better, with the Nooks earning a team cumulative GPA of 3.59 this past season. The award was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year.

The Nanooks were one of seven Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball programs to be recognized by the AVCA, including Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Seattle Pacific, Simon Fraser, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

A record total of 1,313 teams from all levels of the sport, including college and high school, were recognized with the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award. The list includes a total of 171 NCAA Division II programs.

The awards continue to come in for the Nanooks volleyball team, as they ranked in the top-three in team GPAs among GNAC volleyball team for 2019, earning a GNAC Academic All-Sport Award. Additionally, five members from the 2019 Alaska volleyball squad were named GNAC Faculty Athletic Representative's Scholar-Athletes last week. The five honorees included incoming sophomores Colleen File, Eden Murchison and Sophie Schilling, as well as incoming seniors Lahra Weber and Cate Whiting.
