BURNABY, BC – The Alaska Nanooks defeated the Simon Fraser Clan, 87-85. This win brings the team to 10-12 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
Shadeed Shabazz got Alaska going early with an and-one basket. From there the two teams traded baskets until the 16-minute mark when the Clan went on a 19-8 run to push their lead to, 33-19, with 7:52 remaining in the game. The 'Nooks responded with an 11-0 run to end the half and give them a one-point, 39-38, lead going into the half.
Shadeed Shabazz led Alaska in scoring at the half with 17 points. Behind him,
Spencer Sweet had 11 points.
Coming out of the break, the two teams spent the early minutes of the second half trading the lead back and forth. Alaska would break away and take a slim lead but SFU would continue to comeback and tie the game. At the 9:35 mark, Simon Fraser hit a three-pointer to tie the game 63-63. From here,
Shadeed Shabazz heated up and scored 19 of his 37 in the last nine minutes of the game to drive the Nanooks to a, 87-85, win.
Shadeed Shabazz had another monster game, scoring 37 points to go along with his eight rebounds.
Spencer Sweet had an efficient 18 points, going 7-9 from the field and 4-6 from deep.
Alex Sommerfield hit all the right shots at all the right times, going 4-5 from deep and scoring 14 points on the night.
Coach Sparling had this to say about his team's road win "We got down early, the guys battled back, stayed the course, and got a big win up at Simon Fraser. Shabazz had another big night and Alex had a few big shots".
The team shot 32-50 from the field, 15-23 from deep and 8-11 from the free-throw line.
The Nanooks will be coming home for the next four games. Their next game will be against Central Washington on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7 P.M. AKST.
