MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team played their last game of the season today on the road against 6-21, 3-17 GNAC Western Oregon. Defensive miscues and two cold shooting quarters saw the Nanooks losing to the Wolves 52-89.
The 'Nooks found themselves down by seven early in the first quarter but rallied taking a one-point lead and knotting it up several times. However, WOU hit a three pointer with 15 seconds to take the lead and Alaska finished the first quarter down 14-17.
Jocelyn Gandara scored six points and hauled in five rebounds in the opening quarter with
Alanna Conwell also scoring six and adding a rebound and a steal.
The second quarter was when the shooting woes started for the Nanooks only scoring seven total points. The quarter started well with Alaska scoring four points within the first minute to the Wolves' two, but they then went nearly five minutes without making a basket. Due to the scoring drought the 'Nooks entered halftime down 21-41. Gandara finished the half leading the team with 10 points and eight rebounds and tied with Conwell with one steal. The Nanooks finished the half shooting 8-30 from the field, 2-9 from three, and 3-5 from the free throw line.
Alaska came out of the break running and fired up scoring 24 third quarter points. About two minutes into the quarter the Nanooks went on an 8-0 run to pull within 15. After that the two teams began to trade punches and little progress toward a comeback was made, but they kept themselves in the game. The score at the end of the third quarter found Alaska down 45-65.
Sam Tolliver caught fire in the third scoring 13 points and recorded a block, an assist and a rebound.
Kylie Wallace also had a strong quarter with four rebounds, a steal and an assist.
Unfortunately for the Nanooks Tolliver was unable to carry her success from the third to the fourth quarter and the team as a whole had another tough quarter shooting the ball. Again only scoring seven points, Alaska could not mount a comeback and the season ended with a loss for the Nanooks with a final score of 52-89.
Sam Tolliver lead the team in scoring with 17 points, closely followed by
Jocelyn Gandara who had 14. Gandara led the team and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds.
Sabrina Ungaro finished with a team-high two steals and
Zosha Krupa recorded two blocks. The 'Nooks finished 15-63 from the field, 3-18 from beyond the arc and 19-26 from the foul line.
With the loss Alaska finds themselves out of the playoffs and done for the season.
