#11 Nanooks Rifle Takes on Ole Miss and Georgia Southern to Close Out 2020

OXFORD, Miss. – The Alaska Nanooks head to Oxford, Miss., the home of the Ole Miss Rebels. While at Ole Miss, the 'Nooks will face-off with the #3 Rebels on Nov. 17 and Georgia Southern on Nov. 19 in a neutral site match.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of a weekend sweet of the #14-ranked Memphis Tigers. 
 
On day one, Alaska ran the tables, outshooting the Tigers in both smallbore and air rifle. In smallbore, they outscored Memphis 2334-2317 with their newcomer, Marina Gonzalez Mago leading the way for the 'Nooks. She tied for the top score of a 588 and took second in the standings. Next up on the smallbore squad was Daniel Enger who shot a 583 in his Nanooks debut. Liam Eberhart added a 582, Kellen McAferty shot a 581 and Rylan Kissell rounded out the squad with a 571. In air rifle the 'Nooks sent a squad of Jessica Boyce, Eberhart, Enger, Kissell and McAferty out. 
 
Kissell led the way with a 593. Boyce was close behind with a 592 of her own while McAferty added a 591. Eberhart and Enger rounded out the five with scores of 588 and 584. 
 
On day two, Memphis grabbed a one-point edge in smallbore, outscoring the 'Nooks 2331-2330. Despite this, a four-point advantage (2367-2363) in air rifle handed the win over the Alaska by a tight margin of three points. The final score on Sunday, Nov. 15 was 4697-4694. 
 
Kellen McAferty took home the top individual spot with an aggregate score of 1179. He also grabbed the top spot in smallbore with a 589. Eberhart and Enger both grabbed a 581 for the Nanooks while Boyce and Gonzalez Mago finished up with a 579 and 575 respectively. In air rifle, Liam Eberhart led the way for the 'Nooks as he shot a career-high 595, surpassing his previous career-high of 587. With that, he also surpassed his previous aggregate career-high. Boyce added a 592. Enger and McAferty checked in with their own 590's and Kissell shot a 589.

How did it feel to shoot a new PR for air and aggregate while in competition? 
"It felt great! I know I left points on the table there, so I look forward to getting what I can out of the next competition. I enjoyed watching my teammates shoot their best and have a great time doing it."

Upcoming Matches
The Nanooks face-off with one of the top teams in the NCAA heading into the 2020-21 season, the Ole Miss Rebels. Ranked #3 as of Nov. 10 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association, the Rebels are coming off of a pair of wins against UT-Martin on Oct. 11, 4730-4553 and against Memphis on Oct. 17, 4711-4658.
 
Their match scheduled for Nov. 7 against the University of Kentucky was postponed due to COVID-19. 
 
As for Georgia Southern, the Eagles are coming off of two wins against #20 North Georgia, 4563-4562 and the Georgia Military College, 4563-3306. They find themselves at 7-3 with a 3-1 record in SoCon matches.

Matches will begin at 5:00 a.m. AKT with the first smallbore relay followed by the first air rifle relay. After a midday break, smallbore relay two will begin around 9:30 a.m. AKT followed by the second and final relay of air rifle. 
 
This will be the last set of matches for the Nanooks in 2020. They will take off for the holiday season before returning in 2021 and hosting TCU on Jan. 16-17.
