LACEY, Wash. - The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Saint Martin's Saints on Thursday, Jan. 2 on the road 62-96. This loss drops the 'Nooks to 6-6, 1-2 GNAC.
The first quarter saw the Nanooks stay as close in the game as they would be, trailing 19-28. The first five minutes saw the 'Nooks tie things up at 4-4, however that was the lone tie in the game. The Saints jumped out to an 11-15 lead and never let Alaska back into it. Led by Bria Thames, SMU jumped out and extended their lead on the 'Nooks to end the quarter.
The second quarter spelled trouble for the 'Nooks as the Saints put on a scoring frenzy, outscoring the Alaska team 10-25. Saint Martin's pulled away early on, going on a 0-9 run, grabbing a 24-45 lead before a Sam Tolliver three-pointer snapped the run. Tolliver led the way on offense alongside Jocelyn Gandara; they both put up 18 points with Tolliver shooting 7-17 from the field and Gandara going 10-11 from the free throw line.
Sabrina Ungaro was the only other Nanooks player to crack double-digit points putting up 13 points on 50% shooting. Out of the locker room, the 'Nooks were chasing 24 as Saint Martin's held a 29-53 lead. In the third quarter, Alaska found their offensive stride but were still outscored as they put up 24 points to SMU's 25.
Unfortunately the fourth quarter score was too far out of reach for Alaska as Gandara led the way in the fourth with four points of the nine total points. As for the Saints, Tierney DeDonatis put up 10 of her 27 points in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach.
The Nanooks will continue their action on Saturday, Jan. 4 against the Seattle Pacific Falcons at 1:00 p.m. AKT in Seattle, Wash.
