BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Western Washington Vikings on Saturday, Jan. 25 in Bellingham. With the loss, the Nanooks drop to 1-9 in GNAC play.
Jocelyn Gandara was the only Nanook to find any offensive rhythm on the night as she tallied a total of 26 points on 12-20 shooting from the field. Unfortunately no other Alaska player was able to crack double-digits as
Kylie Wallace was the second leading-scorer with six points. The Nanooks were in a large gap following the first quarter, scoring only eight points in the opening quarter. WWU jumped out to a quick 2-22 lead, eventually holding an 8-27 first quarter lead.
Gandara led the 'Nooks at halftime with 10 points on 5-7 shooting after the second quarter saw the 'Nooks get outscored 11-24.
Opening up the third, the Nanooks found some offense, as Wallace scored all six of her points while Gandara scored seven more, adding to her game-high total. Despite the strong third quarter, the Nanooks were in too deep of a hole to mount any comeback. Overall, the fourth quarter slowed down as Gandara scored nine of the 10 points scored by Alaska.
Sam Tolliver scored the only other point on a free throw down the stretch.
Alaska played a much better second half compared to their first half, being outscored only 28-37 compared to the 19-51 halftime deficit.
The Nanooks return home this upcoming week on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1 to face-off with Seattle Pacific and Saint Martin's. Both matchups will be on the front end of double-headers with the men's team. Thursday's game against SPU will begin at 5:15 p.m. AKT and Saturday's matchup with the Saints will begin at 1:00 p.m. AKT.
