Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Nathan Kyle Pearsall

Strong First Half not Enough for @NanooksWBB Against UAA

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to their in-state rivals on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Alaska Anchorage grabbed the victory over the Nanooks 67-79 after the game was tied at halftime. With the loss, the Nanooks fall to 6-10, 1-6 GNAC on the 2019-20 season.

The first half saw the 'Nooks play one of their best 20 minutes of the season. After falling behind by six in the first quarter behind eight points from Kylie Wallace, the 'Nooks made a strong push at the Seawolves to begin the second quarter. Sam Tolliver became the go-to scorer for the Nanooks in the second period when she tallied 11 points on 4-6 shooting. Alaska also managed to outscore UAA in the second quarter, 21-15, tying the game up at 39-39 going into halftime.

Out of the half, Anchorage went on a big run. After the 'Nooks took a small 42-41 lead, UAA went on a 0-11 run, extending their lead to 42-52 and eventually grabbing a 44-55 lead after the third quarter. The biggest downfall for the Nanooks was being outscored 5-16 in the third.

The fourth quarter made for a lot of scoring, but even with their best efforts, the 'Nooks were not able to close the gap ahead of them. With 6:44 remaining in regulation, Alaska pulled within seven points after Sabrina Ungaro hit a high-arching three pointer that sent the Patty into a frenzy.

Unfortunately that was as close as the Nanooks got; the Seawolves went on to a 14 point lead with under a minute remining before Ungaro hit two free throws before the game came to a close. While this was the 25thconsecutive loss to UAA, Ungaro, a redshirt-senior felt this was the best game she'd been a part of in her time on the Nanooks, "I see that this team has the most potential, we are young, but this team has the most potential I have ever seen. This is my favorite game."

The Nanooks stay at home for one more game this week when they host the Yellowjackets of Montana State Billing on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m. AKT.
