@AlaskaNanooksXC Competes in Classic Race at NMU Invite

The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams competed in the opening day of the New Mexico Invitational on Friday morning, participating in the 7.5km classic race at the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area. The two-day invitational will count toward the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association standings.

The Alaska women ranked seventh in the team standings, collecting 46 points with three finishers, while the Nanooks men's team finished fifth with five finishers and 54 points.

In the women's 7.5km classic race, sophomore Anja Maijala was the highest-finishing Alaska skier, placing 11th out of a field of 23 skiers. Maijala registered a time of 31:22.9 to tally 20 points for the Nooks.

Maijala's time was 2:22.2 behind first-place overall's Anne Siri Lervik from the University of Colorado, who posted a time of 29:00.7.

Fellow sophomore Hannah Deuling ranked second among her teammates, 19th overall with a time of 32:42.7 for 13 points. Closing out the Nanooks was freshman Kirsys Campbell, who tallied a time of 33:00.7 for 12 points.

In the men's 7.5km race, redshirt-senior Seiji Takagi was the first Alaska skier to cross the finish line, placing 13th overall with a time of 26:37.1 to collect 20 points for the Nanook men's team.

Takagi's time was 1:26.2 behind the University of Colorado's Alvar Johannes Alev, who placed first overall with a time of 25:10.9.

Fellow senior Tristan Sayre followed Takagi's lead, finishing right behind in 14th overall with a time of 26:38.8 for 19 points, while senior Max Donaldson ranked 18th overall with a time of 27:01.4 for 15 points.

Redshirt-junior Lukash Platil ranked fourth among his teammates, 24th overall with a time of 27:40.2. Senior Arnaud Guyon (28:05.5) and freshman Patrick Marbacher (30:37.7) rounded-out Alaska's men's team, ranking 27th and 31st, respectively.

The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams will close out the 2019 New Mexico Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 2), as they compete in the 5km freestyle race at the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area starting at 8am AKST.
