BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday, Dec. 6 in Bemidji, Minn. Despite grabbing the opening goal, the 'Nooks fell 1-3, dropping them to 9-10-0, 7-6-0-0 WCHA. The teams meet again Saturday, Dec. 7 in the final game of 2019.
Alaska was the first to strike, as
Eriks Zohovs, the freshman from Riga, Latvia found the back of the net for the first time in college, giving the 'Nooks an early 1-0 lead. This goal came 8:24 into the opening period as
Tyler Cline and
Troy Van Tetering assisted on Zohovs' first. The Alaska lead only lasted for seven minutes, however, as the Beavers struck with only 4:57 remaining in the first period, tying the game at 1-1. Ethan Somoza took a pass from Aaron Miller and Tyler Kirkup, sending the tying-goal past
Anton Martinsson in net for the 'Nooks.
Early into the second period, the Beavers struck again, this time it was Charlie Combs who capitalized on a pass from the goalie, Zach Driscoll, netting the game-winner only 2:56 out of the first intermission.
Unfortunately for the Nanooks, Bemidji State was not done there as Tyler Vold took passes from Aaron Miller and Brad Johnson and put the game away 13:09 into the second period, extending the BSU lead to 1-3.
That score stuck through the rest of the second period and the third, ending in a 1-3 BSU win. Bemidji outshot the Nanooks 23-40, breaking through the Alaska defense despite their 12 blocked shots.
These two teams battle again tomorrow, Dec. 7 at 3:07 p.m. AKT as the Nanooks will try and regroup and grab series-split with the Beavers. If the 'Nooks pick up the win, it will be their eighth-consecutive split since their two-game sweep of Michigan Tech just under two months ago.
