Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Alaska Nanooks hockey fell in game one of their two-game series against Northern Michigan, 1-2. This loss drops the Nanooks to 6-7-0, 4-3-0-0 WCHA.
The Nanooks fell behind early, giving up a goal in each of the first two periods. Five minutes into the first period, Wildcat Joseph Nardi scored his first goal of the game. Nardi took a pass from Griffin Loughran and Ty Readman and found the back of the net. Nardi was not done yet, scoring his second of the game and his third of the season only 2:56 into the second period. Nardi took another pass from Loughran and added an assist to Darien Craighead's night giving the Wildcat's a 0-2 lead.
Alaska defenseman,
James LaDouce grabbed a goal back for the Nanooks, cutting the deficit to 1-2, 7:09 into the third period.
Steven Jandric was awarded the only assist on the LaDouce goal. Both Wildcats goals came while on the power play while the Alaska offense was unable to capitalize on their three power-plays through the game.
The end of the third period saw one last opportunity arise for the 'Nooks as they went on the attack without Martinsson in goal, giving them the extra attacker. Alaska was able to get a couple shots on net but John Hawthorne, the NMU goaltender sent away all attempts. With the Nanooks not capitalizing on their power-plays and only putting 17 shots on net to the Wildcats 27, NMU held the upper hand most of the game.
Anton Martinsson allowed two goals while saving 25 shots.
These two teams play again Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2:07 p.m. AKT in Marquette, Mich. as the Nanooks look to split the weekend series. The Nanooks are looking for their first victory against Northern Michigan since Nov. 18, 2017 when they defeated the Wildcats 4-1.
