CRAFTSBURY, Vt. – Members from the Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams kicked-off day one of the U.S. Cross Country Skiing National Championships on Thursday morning, competing in the 15/10km individual-start, classic race at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury, Vermont.
In the women's 10km classic race, sophomore
Anja Maijala was the lone Alaska competitor, placing 64th overall in a field of 246 skiers. Maijala's crossed the finish line with a time of 35:24.4, only 4:40 behind first place's Caitlin Patterson (30:44.7).
In the men's 15km classic, three of the four competing Nanooks placed within the top-100 in a field of 303 skiers. Redshirt-senior
Seiji Takagi was the highest-ranking Nanook of the day, posting a time of 46:04.3 to rank 72nd overall. Takagi's time was 4:23 behind first place overall's Kyle Bratrud (41:41.8).
Following Takagi, redshirt-sophomore
Lukash Platil placed 83rd overall with a time of 46:24.4, while senior
Max Donaldson ranked 94th overall with a time of 46:45.2.
Rounding out Alaska's top-five was redshirt-freshman
Logan Mowry, who was just edged out of the top-100 by placing 102st, posting a time of 47:20.0.
Members of the Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams will be back in action tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 4), as they are set to compete in the classic sprints at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. The women's classic sprint qualifiers begin at 5:30am AKST, while the men are set to begin at 6:30am AKST.
