CRAFTSBURY, Vt. – Members of the Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams competed in day two of the U.S. Cross Country Skiing National Championships on Friday morning, racing in the classic sprints at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftbury, Vermont.
"Today's classic sprint races not only close up the first half of the Championships, but also the classic technique portions," assistant coach
Eliska Albrigtsen said on Friday. "We have a short, one-day break before the 20 and 30km skate races with a mass-start, but we will be ready."
Sophomore
Anja Maijala was the only Alaska Nanook to move onward from the classic sprint qualifying race, posting a time of 4:20.52 to rank 75th overall. Maijala's time was enough to move on into the junior quarterfinal heat but unfortunately, didn't move on to the semifinals.
Freshman
Catherine Reed-Metayer placed 157th overall out of a field of 222 skiers, posting a time of 4:37.57 in the qualifying round.
On the men's side, redshirt-freshman
Logan Mowry placed the highest among the Nanooks at 125th overall, posting a time of 3:43.17.
Redshirt-senior
Seiji Takagi followed closely behind with a qualifying time of 3:44.19 to place 129th overall.
Rounding out the Nooks was senior
Max Donaldson and redshirt-sophomore
Lukash Platil, who posted times of 3:44.77 and 3:48.63, respectively.
Alaska Nanooks women's Nordic ski team member
Grace Miller will compete in the Paralympic sprints tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 5), before heading to Sweden for the week to compete internationally.
The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 6 to compete in the 20/30km mass-start freestyle race, with the women set for 5am AKST and the men scheduled for 6:30am AKST.
