FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team fell in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday night, as the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks bested the Nooks 3-1 at the Alaska Airlines Court. Alaska went 23-25, 30-28, 21-25 and 19-25 against Northwest Nazarene, dropping their overall record to 2-7 and 0-2 in conference contests while NNU earns their first win of the season, moving to 1-8 overall, 1-1 GNAC.
"We had moments of great play and moments where we were too casual and not attentive to the details," Scott said on Saturday. "We need to execute at a higher level for longer periods of time in order to be successful within this conference. Statistically, we did what we needed to do to compete with a team like NNU but we made some critical errors at the wrong times."
Alaska registered 59 kills on the night with only 20 errors to tally a .213 hitting percentage against NNU. The Nooks were led by sophomore outside hitter
Lahra Weber, who tied the game-high in kills with 22. Of Weber's 53 total attempts, the Berlin, Germany native only posted five errors for a .321 hitting percentage. Weber collected her fourth double-double of the season by chipping in 16 digs, while also posting two blocks and one ace for a total of 25.0 points on the night.
Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter
Tatum Upchurch also registered her fourth double-double of the season, posting 19 digs and 10 kills. Upchurch had a night at the net, with two block assists and one solo block, while also producing three assists and one ace.
Junior middle blocker
Kim Wong also tallied 10 kills against the Nighthawks, tallying a game-high hitting percentage of .438. Sophomore setter
Cate Whiting led all players in assists on Saturday, posting a game-high 51 for the Nooks.
Defensively, freshman libero
Makena Overbey tallied 17 digs, while junior right side Mica Shanglen pitched in 14.
Alaska outdid their opponent in blocks, posting five solo blocks and eight block assists for a team total of 9.0, while NNU only collected five solo blocks and four block assists for a team total of 7.0.
The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team will hit the road next week, taking on in-state rival Alaska Anchorage in Anchorage on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7pm AKT before heading to Billings, Montana to face the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 5pm AKT.
