Gold Takes Down Blue 4-0 in @NanooksHockey Scrimmage

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A three-point night by freshman defenseman Matthew Doran helped the Gold team to a 4-0 victory over the Blue team, as the Alaska Nanooks hockey team hosted their annual intrasquad scrimmage at the Patty Ice Arena on Saturday night.

After a scoreless 25-minute first period, the Gold team scored three goals within four minutes of each other to take a 3-0 lead over their opponent. Sophomore forward Brennan Blaszczak tallied a power play goal at the 11:21 mark with assists credited to Doran and freshman defenseman Antti Virtenan. After going D-to-D at the blueline, Doran kicked the puck low on a 3-on-5 man-advantage to Blaszczak, who scored backdoor to make it 1-0.

Just over a minute later (12:56), junior forward Colton Leiter received a stretch-pass from freshman forward Caleb Hite before stickhandling through three defending Blue players to net Gold's second tally of the night. Virtanen was given the secondary assist on Leiter's goal.

At the 13:34 mark, freshman forward Sam Ruffin made it a 3-0 game after the Gold team entered the offensive zone on a rush before scoring backdoor. Junior forward was given the primary assist on Ruffin's goal, while Doran was awarded the secondary.

Doran scored an empty-net goal for his third point of the night at the 24:13 mark, sealing Gold's victory.

All four of Alaska's netminders registered 25 minutes on Saturday with junior goaltender Niko DellaMaggiore stopping the most pucks with 10 saves. Junior goaltender Anton Martinsson and rookie goaltender Gustavs Grigals collected nine saves each while sophomore goaltender Tony Rehm posted six saves.

In the skills competition, junior forward Kylar Hope was named the fastest skater while fellow junior forward Kyle Marino earned the title of hardest shot with a 99mph slapshot. The Blue team won the shootout.

The Alaska Nanooks hockey team hosts Simon Fraser in an exhibition game at the Carlson Center next Saturday, Sept. 29 with puck-drop slated for 7:07pm AKT. The Alaska Nanooks Ticketing Office is hosting a Family 4-Pack special where fans can get four general admission tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for $50.
