@NanooksVB Falls Victim to West Region Opponents in Final Day of Showcase

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team closed out the 2018 DII West Region Showcase with a pair of tough nonconference losses on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Point Loma before dropping a 3-1 decision to California State University at Los Angeles at the Conlan Center. Alaska's overall record falls to 2-5, while Point Loma improves to 2-4 and Cal State LA remains undefeated with an 8-0 record.

The Nooks fell 21-25, 20-25 and 19-25 to Point Loma in an early morning match in San Rafael.

Inside the Box Score
  • Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Tatum Upchurch led Alaska's offensive charge on Saturday morning, tallying a team-best eight kills.
  • Upchurch also picked up three digs, one block assist, one assist and one service ace for a team-high 9.5 points.
  • Junior middle blocker Kim Wong tallied Alaska's best hitting percentage of the match, posting seven kills and one error from 16 total attempts for a team-best .375 hitting percentage.
  • Sophomore setter Cate Whiting posted a team-best 28 assists, while also picking up four digs.
  • Freshman libero Makena Overbey led all players in digs on Saturday morning, collecting 22.

Alaska fell 14-25, 14-25, 25-20 and 18-25 to undefeated Cal State LA in the final match of the West Region Showcase.

  • Sophomore middle blocker Emily Moorhead and freshman outside hitter Lahra Weber tied for a team-best nine kills against the Golden Eagles.
  • Moorhead collected nine kills with no errors off of 16 total attempts for team-best hitting percentage of .562.
  • Along with Weber's nine kills, the Berlin, Germany native also posted six digs, two service aces, two block assists and one solo block for a team-high 13.0 points.
  • Whiting kept the momentum into the second match of the day, producing 26 assists and seven digs.
  • Overbey registered a team-best eight digs.

The Alaska Nanooks open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at home next week, as they host the Central Washington Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 6 before taking on the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks on Saturday, Sept. 8. Both matches are set for 7pm AKT at the Alaska Airlines Court at the Patty Center
