@NanooksHockey Hosts Year-End Banquet, Frye Named MVP

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – On Friday evening, the Alaska Nanooks hockey team celebrated the 2017-18 season with their annual end of the year awards banquet at the Westmark Hotel, hosted by the Face-Off Club. The evening was highlighted by senior defenseman Zach Frye, who took home four pieces of hardware.

Frye received Alaska Hockey's highest honor on Friday, taking home the Steve Moria Most Valuable Player award, as voted on by his teammates. In addition to being named the team's MVP, Frye was also named the Top Playoff Performer, the Keith Street Top Scorer and the Shawn Chambers Top Defenseman. Frye concludes his four-year career with the Nanooks appearing in 136 games, collecting 21 goals and 56 assists for 77 points.

In the 2017-18 season alone, Frye appeared in 35 games for the Nanooks, tallying a conference-best 11 goals for defensemen and 23 assists for a career-high 34 points. Frye posted one goal and two assists for a career-high three points in Friday's 4-2 win before posting the game-winning assist in Saturday's 4-1 victory. In the Nanooks' last 16 games of the season, Frye appeared on the scoresheet in nine of those occasions, which produced 21 points.

The blueliner was a three-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Week this past season, February's WCHA Defensive Player of the Month and most recently, Frye was named to the All-WCHA First Team. Off the ice, Frye was named to the WCHA All-Academic Team for the third-straight year.

Redshirt-senior defenseman Justin Woods picked up three awards on Friday, including the Fan's Choice award, the Rick Pitta Most Dedicated Player award and the Ryan Reinheller Humanitarian of the Year award. The 2017-18 team captain appeared in each of Alaska's 36 games this season, posting nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points.
