STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams closed out the 2018 NCAA Skiing National Championships on Saturday morning, competing in the 15/20km mass-start, freestyle race at Howelson Hill.
The Alaska Nanooks conclude the 65th annual Championships placing 14th overall as a team with a combined 58 points. Denver University was the overall champion on Saturday, tallying 604 points between two days of Alpine and Nordic events to take the national title. The DU Pioneers also took home the National Championship title in Nordic skiing (305 points) and the men's Nordic team title (163 points), while Nordic women of Colorado University took home the title with 156 points.
In Saturday's race alone, the Alaska women combined for 19 points to rank ninth among the women's Nordic teams, while the Nanook men totaled nine points to finish 13th.
In the women's 15km freestyle race, sophomore
Anna Darnell was the highest-finishing Nanook on the day ranking 18th overall. In a field of 40 other skiers, Darnell crossed the finish line in 46:32.0 for 13 points.
Dartmouth's Katherine Ogden was the overall winner in the women's race, posting a time of 43:22.0
Following Darnell, junior
Kati Roivas placed 25th overall with a time of 47:28.7 for six points, while senior
Ann-Cathrin Uhl finished her collegiate skiing career ranking 32nd overall with a time of 49:29.5.
In the men's race, senior
Seiji Takagi posted the fastest time of his teammates, ranking 26th overall for five points. In a field of 40 skiers, Takagi crossed the finish line with a time of 56:54.0.
Northern Michigan's Ian Torchia was the overall winner in the men's 20km freestyle race, completing the course in 54:21.0.
Junior
Max Donaldson wasn't far behind, as the Fairbanks native placed 29th overall with a time of 57:05.7 for two points. Senior
Nick Lovett rounded-out the remaining Alaska skiers in Saturday's race, placing 32nd overall with a time of 57:22.09.
