@NanooksHockey Skates to 2-2 Tie at Bemidji with Third Period Rally

BEMIDJI, Minn. – In a rare Thursday night matchup, the Alaska Nanooks hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with the Bemidji State University Beavers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest at the Sanford Center in Bemidji. Bemidji scored in the three-on-three overtime to earn the extra conference point.

The tie improves Alaska's overall record to 11-17-3 and 9-14-2-1 in league games, while the Beavers move to 15-11-7 on the season and 12-8-5-3 in league tilts. Alaska will walk away from Thursday's game with one conference point, while BSU earns two points with the double-overtime goal. At the time of article, the Nanooks move up to sixth place in the conference standings with 30 points, tied with Alabama-Huntsville.

After a scoreless first period, Bemidji opened up the scoring on Thursday with a power play tally from Charlie Combs at the 13:35 mark of the second. Combs' shot snuck past Alaska sophomore goaltender Anton Martinsson for his 11th goal of the season.

Alaska came back from second intermission determined to come back, as freshman forward Steven Jandric scored only 38 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 1-1. Redshirt-senior defenseman Justin Woods took a shot from the point that caught Jandric's stick for his third goal of the season. Sophomore forward Colton Leiter was awarded the secondary assist on Jandric's even-strength goal.

At the 5:14 mark, Combs' stuck again to give the home team a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Combs' 12th goal of the season was assisted by Dan Billet and Adam Brady, which was Brady's second assist of the night.

With just 11 seconds remaining in regulation and six skaters on the ice, Alaska's offensive efforts came through, as Jandric scored his second goal of the game to tie things up at 2-2. Like before, Woods' shot was initially saved by BSU goaltender Michael Bitzer, but Jandric cleaned up the rebound after being left alone in front of the crease. Jandric's fourth goal of the season was once again assisted by Woods and Leiter with the three Nooks each collecting multi-point nights.

After a scoreless five-one-five, five minute overtime, the official result was considered a tie and both the Nanooks and the Beavers secured at least one WCHA point on the night.

Jandric was given a game misconduct and five-minute major throughout the three-on-three, five-minute overtime putting Alaska on the penalty kill for the remainder of the second overtime. BSU's Leo Fitzgerald scored at the 3:32 mark to earn the extra WCHA point.

The Alaska Nanooks will close out their two-week WCHA road trip by taking on the Bemidji Beavers again tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 16) with puck-drop at the Sanford Center scheduled for 4:07pm AKST.
