Buzzer-Beater Sends Concordia Past @NanooksWBB 66-64

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Concordia Cavaliers scored a layup with only four seconds remaining in regulation to edge past the Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team 66-64 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest at the Cavalier Court on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Alaska's overall record to 4-18 and 0-16 in conference play, while Concordia improves to 13-11 on the season and 7-9 in league matchups.

Entering the final quarter down by 10, Alaska came back with a 9-0 run from the 6:44-3:13 mark to tie the game at 57-57. After some back-and-forth play, Alaska took a 60-59 lead at the 1:58 mark before the Cavaliers made a layup with 41 seconds to take a 63-61 lead. Down 64-61 with 13 seconds left, junior guard Emily Evans drained a three-point bucket to tie things up at 64-all before a last second layup by Concordia's Bailey Cartwright sealed the victory.

The Nanooks shot 41.8 percent from the floor on Saturday (23-for-55), with their best shooting quarter coming in the first, as they shot 54.5 percent from the floor (6-for-11). The Nooks also shot 52.4 percent from beyond the arc (11-for-21) and 70.0 percent from the free throw line (7-for-10). As a team, the Nooks also picked up 17 offensive and 23 defensive boards to total 40 rebounds and also collected eight steals and eight assists.

Alaska was led offensively by Evans, who shot 7-for-12 from the floor, 7-for-11 from three-point range and 1-for-2 from the free throw line to tally 22 points on the day. Evans also picked up three rebounds, two steals and one assist in a 34 minutes on the court.

Sophomore guard Lexi Carpenter shot 7-for-16 from the floor, 2-for-7 from three-point range and 1-for-1 from the free throw line to boast 17 points against the Cavaliers, while also chipping in six rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Sophomore forward Marian Wamsley was the only other Alaska player to score double-digit figures on Saturday, collecting 10 points and tying for a team-high six rebounds.

The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will return to their home court next week for a pair of GNAC contests, as they host the Saint Martin's Saints on Thursday, Feb. 15 before taking on the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Alaska Airlines Court. Tip-off for both games is scheduled for 7pm AKST.
