FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 3 Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team dropped their first match of the season on Friday morning, falling to the No. 6 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 4690-4649 at the TCU Rifle Range. Alaska falls to 6-1 overall on the season, while TCU improves to 8-1 on the 2018-19 season.
TCU topped the Nanooks in smallbore, 2322-2307 before stealing the air rifle relays, 2368-2342.
"We shot a strong smallbore today but it wasn't enough against a team like TCU who has a lot of depth," head coach
Layne Lewis said on Friday. "Everyone dug deep and performed well through the exhaustion of shooting back-to-back days. We are ready to head to Reno and bounce back after today's loss."
Individually, only three Nanooks appeared in the top-10, led by senior
JT Schnering. Schering ranked third overall individually with an aggregate score of 1173. The Fairbanks native placed second in smallbore with a 584 before ranking sixth in air rifle with a 589.
Freshman Kellan McAferty tied for second in smallbore with Schnering with a 584 before placing 12th in air rifle with a 582. McAferty's aggregate score of 1166 ranked him eighth overall individually.
Redshirt-senior
Robert Scott was the only other Nanook to appear in the top-10 individual standings, shooting a 572 in smallbore and a 592 in air rifle to total a 1164 to rank 10th.
TCU claimed the first two individual spots on Friday, led by Casey Lutz, who tallied an aggregate score of 1175. Lutz ranked first in air rifle with a 597, tying teammate Kristen Hemphill, while registering a 578 in smallbore.
Fellow Horned Frog Liz Marsh placed second overall individual with an aggregate score of 1174, shooting a match-best 587 in smallbore before shooting a 587 in air rifle.
The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team hits the road once again, heading to Reno, Nevada to take on the University of Nevada Wolfpack in a two-day match on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18.
