Sharp-Shooting Sharks Defeat @NanooksMBB 92-77

HONOLULU – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team faced a sharp-shooting opponent on Saturday afternoon, falling 92-77 to the Hawaii Pacific Sharks in the final game of the GNAC/PacWest Crossover at the McCabe Gymnasium on the Chaminade campus.

"We got behind early and couldn't dig ourselves out of the hole," head coach Greg Sparling said on Saturday. "Hawaii Pacific played extremely well and made a lot of quality shots against us. We played better in the second half but by that time, we were too far down. We're going regroup and get ready to take on Hawaii-Hilo on their home court on Monday."

The Nanooks shot 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the floor, 37.1 percent from three-point range (13-for-35) and 82.4 from the free throw line (14-for-17). On the other end of the court, Hawaii Pacific shot 56.6 percent from the field (30-for-53), 46.2 percent from beyond the arc (12-for-26) and 74.1 percent from the free throw line (20-for-27).

As a team, Alaska pulled down eight offensive and 16 defensive boards, totaling 24 rebounds against the Sharks. The Nooks also tallied 10 assists and five steals.

Junior guard Aushanti Potts-Woods led Alaska's scoring on Saturday, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, 2-for-7 from three-point range and 3-for-4 from the free throw line for a game-high 19 points.

Junior guard Spencer Sweet followed Potts-Woods performance with 17 points, shooting 4-for-7 from the floor with three of those buckets coming from behind the three-point line and 6-for-7 from the free throw line.

Senior guard Alex Baham dropped five three-pointers for a 15-point effort, while junior guard Jalon McCullough collected 11 points against the Sharks.

Around the net, junior forward Michael Kluting led his teammates with two offensive and four defensive boards for six rebounds.

HPU was led by Jonathan Janssen, who posted a 22-point effort against the Nanooks, while also chipping in a game-high four assists.

The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will be back in action on Monday, Nov. 12, as they take on the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans in a nonconference contest at the Afook-Chinen Auditorium on the UHH campus in Hilo. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30pm AKST.
