JSU Gamecocks Visit #4 @NanooksRifle for Three Matches

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – After taking down Ohio State and Nebraska two weeks ago, the No. 4-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team is set to host three matches this week against No. 14 Jacksonville State University. The first match of the week is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25 before continuing Saturday, Oct. 27 and finishing on Sunday, Oct. 28.

Last Time Out
The Alaska Nanooks rifle team opened up the 2018-19 season in Fairbanks two weeks ago, taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes and the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in two head-to-head matches. The Nooks earned their first win of the season on Friday, Oct. 12, taking down OSU 4666-4659 before earning their second-straight victory against Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 14, 4693-4662.

Ranked Nooks
As of Oct. 22, the Nanooks currently sit in the No. 4 spot in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Poll with 4693. Alaska's upcoming weekend competition of Jacksonville State also appeared in the rankings, placing 14th overall.

Alaska Sits in Fifth
In the NCAA Rifle's team averages, Alaska currently ranks fifth in team aggregate total with an average of 4679.5. West Virginia sits in first in team aggregate average with a 4702.5, followed by Kentucky (4702), Air Force (4700.67), TCU (4699.6) and Murray State (4687.25).

In smallbore, the Nanooks rank seventh with a team average of 2312, while Alaska sits in fifth with an air rifle average of 2366.5.

The Kids are Back
Seven of Alaska's nine shooters on this year's roster are returners for the 2017-18 season, including three of the five student-athletes who participated in the NCAA Rifle Championships last March. The Nooks welcome back sophomore Haley Castillo, junior Liam Eberhart, junior Amy Gentry, junior Grace Nelson, senior JT Schnering, redshirt-senior Robert Scott and senior Nathan Taylor.

New Faces on the Range
The 2017-18 Nanooks rifle team welcomes two newcomers this season, including Morgan Erickson (Powell, Wyo.) and Kellen McAferty (Littlerock, Wash.).

Weekend Outlook
Each of the three matches this weekend are head-to-head battles with the Nooks taking on Jacksonville State University on Thursday, Oct. 25, Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28. Thursday and Sunday's matches will take place at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range at the Patty Center, while Saturday's match is located at the Tanana Valley Sportsman's Association.

On Thursday and Sunday, relay one will begin at 9am AKDT, while relay two is set for 1:30pm AKDT. Saturday will only feature one relay for everyone, beginning at 10am AKDT.
