FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
Led by rookie Kellen McAferty, the No. 3-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team earned their second win of the season, defeating the No. 8-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers 4693-4662. The Nooks bested their opponent in smallbore 2319-2307 and in air rifle 2374-2355.

"We shot fantastic today and it was a really fun match against Nebraska, we always enjoy when they come up," head coach Layne Lewis said on Sunday. "We had a lot of great contributions from everyone today, including Kellen's performance being our top overall shooter. The performance overall as a team was great, everyone dug deep and worked hard today. We are going to continue our plans and keep training hard for our next match against Jacksonville State in two weeks."

In only his second collegiate showing, McAferty led all shooters in Sunday's match with an aggregate score of 1177. McAferty placed first in smallbore with a 878, before placing fourth in air rifle with a 590, all personal-best scores.

Senior JT Schnering followed McAferty's lead, placing second overall with an aggregate total of 1176. Schnering placed fourth in smallbore with a 579 before placing first overall in air rifle with a 597, a career-best score he tied with teammate Hailey Castillo.

Nebraska followed Schnering and McAferty's scores with impressive results of their own, taken third through sixth place in the overall individual rankings, led by Samantha Peterson, who posted an 1170.

Castillo placed seventh overall with an 1163 with help of her personal-best 597 air gun score, before shooting a 566 in smallbore.

Redshirt-senior Robert Scott ranked ninth overall with an 1163, while junior Liam Eberhart closed-out Alaska's top five shooters with an 1162 on the day.

The Nanooks will be back on the range with three matches against Jacksonville State University on Thursday, Oct. 25, Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28. Thursday and Sunday's matches will take place at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range at the Patty Center, while Saturday is scheduled at the Tanana Valley Sportsman's Association.
