LACEY, Wash. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday evening, falling to the Saint Martin's Saints 66-61 at the Marcus Pavilion in Lacey. Alaska falls to 4-12 overall and 0-10 in conference play, while the Saints improve to 6-12 on the season and 2-8 in league games.
Despite outdoing their opponent in almost every statistical category, the Saints capitalized on the charity line, going 26-for-33 from the free throw line. Alaska on the other hand, went 7-for-11 from the free throw line.
As a team, Alaska shot 41.8 percent from the field (23-for-55), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (8-for-24) and 63.6 percent from the free throw line (7-for-11). On the other end of the court, the Saints shot only 31.6 percent from the floor (18-for-37), 23.5 percent from three-point range (4-for-17) and 78.8 percent from the free throw line (26-for-33).
The Nanooks tallied 12 offensive rebounds to SMU's 11 and 31 defensive boards to the Saints' 21 to total 43 against SMU's 32 on the day. The Nanooks also posted 13 assists to Saint Martin's eight, while both teams tied in blocks with two apiece.
Junior guard
Emily Evans led her teammates in scoring, shooting 6-for-14 from the floor, including 4-for-10 from beyond the arc, to tally 16 points on against the Saints. Evans also chipped in one rebound and one steal in 27 minutes on the court.
Sophomore forward
Kylie Wallace and sophomore guard
Lexi Carpenter were the only other Alaska players to score double-digit figures on Saturday, both registering 13 points. Wallace shot 4-for-6 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line, while tallying five rebounds and three assists. Carpenter shot 5-for-16 from the floor and 3-for-7 from three-point range, while also tallying seven rebounds and three assists.
Junior forward
Angela Murnion led all players on Saturday in rebounding, posting eight against the Saints.
The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will return to their home court next week for a pair of GNAC contests in Fairbanks, as the Nooks host the Simon Fraser Clan on Thursday, Jan. 25 before facing the Western Washington Vikings on Saturday, Jan. 27. Both games will be the first of an Alaska Nanooks double-header with the Nanooks men's basketball team and will take place at 5:15pm AKST.
