HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Huskies scored with 1:06 left in the third period to defeat the Alaska Nanooks hockey team 4-3 and complete the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Saturday night. The loss drops Alaska's overall record to 9-15-2 and 8-12-1-1 in conference play, while the Huskies improve to 13-9-5 on the season and 9-6-5-2 in league games.
"I thought we had a really good start to tonight's game and a solid first period effort," head coach
Lance West said on Saturday. "We responded well in the third and gave ourselves a chance but only playing well for 40 minutes in a game won't get you a road win in this league."
The Nanooks got on the board early on Saturday, as sophomore forward
Tyler Cline registered his seventh goal of the season only 75 seconds into the first period. Cline is now on a three-game goal streak and was assisted by fellow sophomore forwards
Kylar Hope and
Troy Van Tetering.
Almost six minutes later, senior forward
Tayler Munson made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors at the 8:52 mark of the first period. Munson's third goal of the season was assisted by junior forward
Chad Staley and senior defenseman
Zach Frye.
With five seconds remaining in the first period, Michigan Tech's Seamus Donohue collected his second goal of the season, a power-play tally, at the 19:55 mark of the first period.
The Huskies scored twice-more in the second period with a pair of even-strength goals from Justin Misiak and Thomas Beretta at the 12:34 and 18:08 marks, respectively.
Frye tied the game at 3-3 with a power play goal at the 5:26 mark of the third period for his seventh goal of the season. The Spokane, Washington native has now registered at least one point in five of Alaska's last six games. Frye's third power play goal of the season was assisted by sophomore defenseman
Tristan Thompson and Staley.
The Huskies' Joe L'Esperance sealed the victory with an even-strength third period goal at the 18:54 mark of the third period to make it 4-3 MTU.
The Nanooks were edged in shots 24-21 by Michigan Tech, as sophomore goaltender
Niko DellaMaggiore registered 20 saves against the Huskies. On the other end of the ice, Michigan Tech's Devin Kero tallied 18 on the night.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will enjoy a bye-week next week, before hosting the Ferris State University Bulldogs on a two-game WCHA series at the Carlson Center on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3. Puck-drop on both nights is scheduled for 7:07pm AKST.
