@NanooksWBB Falls to Concordia in Conference Action

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball continues to hunt for their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory, as the Nooks fell 74-47 to the Concordia Cavaliers at the Alaska Airlines Court on Thursday night. The loss drops Alaska's overall record to 4-9 on the season and 0-7 in conference play, while the Cavaliers improve to 10-4 on the season and 4-2 in league games.

"I thought our team played really hard tonight," head coach Brett Sawyer said on Thursday. "Concordia is a really good team and at times I thought we played well against Cartwright, who's one of their best players. I think we're getting better and we'll make some adjustments for Saturday but I think tonight's loss is on me because the girls played hard and did everything we asked of them. We'll come back on Saturday and look to get our first conference victory."

Junior forward Ashlie Blackburn and sophomore guard Lexi Carpenter led the Nanooks with 13 points each against the Cavaliers with Blackburn shooting 5-for-7 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free throw line, while Carpenter shot 5-12 from the floor, 1-for-5 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Blackburn also chipped in five rebounds, two steals and one assist in 27 minutes on the floor for Alaska.

Junior guard Emily Evans was the only other Nook to score double-digit figures on Thursday, shooting 3-for-9 from the floor with all three buckets coming from behind the arc, and 2-for-4 from the free throw line to register 11 points.

Junior forward Josie Sewell tied Blackburn for a team-high five boards while also registering a team-best four assists in 32 minutes on the court.

As a team, the Nanooks shot 38.3 percent from the floor (18-for-47), 26.7 percent from three-point range (4-for-15) and 77.8 percent from the free throw line (7-for-9). Alaska picked up four offensive and 24 defensive rebounds to total 28 boards on the night, 11 assists, six steals and three blocks.

The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team will look to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 13 as they host the Western Oregon Wolves in a GNAC contest at the Alaska Airlines Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm AKST.
