CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No.5th-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team remains undefeated on the season, as the Nooks defeated the Citadel's coed rifle team and women's rifle team in a tri-team match at the McAlister Field House on Wednesday afternoon. Alaska combined for an aggregate total of 4687, while the Citadel's coed team registered a score of 4594 and their women's team posting a total of 4168.
"The match went really well today for it being out first time to the Citadel in several years," head coach
Layne Lewis said on Wednesday. "It was nice to see the NCAA Championships venue for this year and we look forward to returning and competing here in March for the National Championship. Our top shooters were all in the top-10, which I'm really proud of. Sagen had another spectacular day, while Spencer almost tied his career personal-best. We're going to pack up and get ready for our next match in Palmyra on Saturday."
The Nanooks smoked the competition in smallbore with a team total of 2321, while the Citadel's coed team recorded a 2279 and the women's team posting a 1998. In air rifle, Alaska placed first with a team score of 2366 to the Citadel's 2315 and the Citadel's women's team's 2170.
Individually, Alaska swept 1st through 6th place in the individual standings, led by redshirt-senior
Sagen Maddalena. Maddalena recorded her fifth-straight match being the top overall individual after Wednesday's competition, as the Groveland, California native shot a 582 in smallbore and a 596 in air rifle to combine for an aggregate score of 1178.
Fellow senior
Luke Johnson's 580 in smallbore and 591 in air rifle placed him second individually with an aggregate score of 1171. Freshman
Spencer Jacobs cracked the top-three individually with an aggregate score of 1168, posting a 581 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle.
Juniors
JT Schnering (116) and
Robert Scott (1165) rounded out the top-five shooters individually, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively.
Also competing on Wednesday was sophomore
Amy Gentry (1161) and sophomore
Grace Nelson (1146).
The Citadel's top shooter in Wednesday's match was Allison Auten, who combined for an aggregate score of 1153 with a 570 in smallbore and a 583 in air rifle.
The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 13, as they compete in the annual Palmyra Invitational in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
