FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team defeated their alumni 3-1 in an exciting preseason scrimmage at the Alaska Airlines Court on Saturday night, with the Nooks posting scores of 25-13, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-20 to seal the victory.
As a team, Alaska registered 63 kills to the alumni's 33, while also posting 62 assists, 57 digs, nine service aces, three solo blocks and four block assists. The alumni tallied 59 digs, 30 assists, seven solo blocks, three service aces and two block assists.
Freshmen
Markie Miller and
Lahra Weber led all players offensively on Saturday night, as both the newcomers posted 16 kills each. Redshirt-senior
Maddie Davis followed up Weber and Miller's leads with seven kills herself. On the alumni side, Jessica Hill led her team with 10 kills.
Senior
Rachel Nichols posted a game-high 32 assists while freshman
Cate Whiting pitched in 22 assists for the Nanooks. On the other end of the court, Michaela McGee and Jessica Hill each posted 11 assists for the alumni.
Defensively, sophomore libero
Jenna Hickel led all players with 26 digs on the night, while Aurissa Martens and
Meagan Olsen collected 16 digs each for the alumni.
The Alaska Nanooks officially kick off the 2017 season on Friday, as the team will travel to Virginia Beach to take on Elizabeth City State University on Sept. 1 at 1pm AKT.
