Nanook Olympics Slated for Saturday

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Although the Alaska Nanooks varsity sports' 2016-17 seasons have ended, the competition is not quite over yet for the student-athletes and staff.

Nanooks from each of the 10 varsity sports and members of the Alaska Department of Athletics will come together to compete in the 2017 Nanook Olympics on Saturday, April 15 from 11am to 5pm across several on-campus venues. The event is hosted by the Alaska Nanooks Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is open to the public. Entry to the event is free.

Competition sports will include a 4-on-4 ice hockey and basketball tournament, 5-on-5 volleyball matches, three-person ski and rifle relays and a four-person swim relay.

The 4-on-4 hockey tournament will kick-off the day at the Patty Ice Arena from 11am to 12:15 before heading to the field directly outside the Student Recreation Center for the ski relay from 12:30pm to 1:45pm. Following the ski race, there will be a short 15 minute break from 1:45pm to 2pm.

The Olympics continue with the four-person swimming relays at the Patty Pool from 2pm to 3pm before heading to the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in the Patty Center for the rifle relays from 3pm to 3:40pm. The remainder of the events will take place on the Alaska Airlines Court at the Patty Center with volleyball and basketball taking place from 3:40-4:20pm and 4:20-5pm, respectively.

Student-athlete teams and brackets have already been created for the competitions, including a staff team and two separate teams representing the American and Canadian players on the Alaska hockey team.

*Please note the bracket is set up for games to be three minutes long with the final being four minutes.
