ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Five from the Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams posted top-10 finishes on Saturday afternoon, as the Nooks competed in the men's and women's 10/5km classic race at the Kincaid Trails.
"We were really pleased to have both the men and the women finish third today in team scoring," head coach Nick Crawford said following Saturday's race. "I think this is our best day yet as a full team this season. We ended up with seven athletes inside the top-12 for RMISA skiers for men and women combined."
Senior Nichole Bathe placed the highest of any Nanook on the day, finishing sixth overall with a time of 16:23.5 for 27 points. Bathe was followed by junior Ann-Cathrin Uhl, who also finished in the top-10, placing ninth with a time of 16:33.6 for 22 points.
Junior Sarissa Lammers barely missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th with a time of 16:44.3. Rounding out the Alaska Nanooks women's team was freshman Anna Darnell (17:38.4), senior Hannah Rowland (17:49.4) and senior Anne-Tine Markset (18:37.8).
"The women had a great day to finish third overall," Crawford said of his women's team. We finished well ahead of Denver and Utah, who are traditionally powerhouse teams in the RMISA. It was great having Nichole back with the team after she sat out in the races earlier in the week to recover from the Under-23 World Championships. Ann-Cathrin and Sarissa both had great races today as well, finishing within 20 seconds of Nichole and just a few places back."
On the men's side, redshirt-senior Michael Fehrenbach posted an eighth place finish with a 10km time of 28:11.2 for 23 points. Redshirt-junior Jan Cech (28:38.6) and redshirt-sophomore Nick Lovett (28:43.9) followed-up Fehrenbach's performance placing ninth and tenth, respectively.
Sophomore Max Donaldson placed 12th overall with a time of 28:54.7, while junior Seiji Takagi (30:12.2) and junior Alexander Eckert (30:31.5) rounded out the Alaska men's team.
"It was fun to see we had four guys stacked up from eighth-12th place today," Crawford concluded. "These guys train together all year so it's good to see them all put together a great performance collectively on the same day. The many sections of gradual uphill on the course favored athletes who have good diagonal stride technique. All four of our top guys are quite good at striding and it showed today."
In Saturday's race only, the Alaska Nanooks men's team recorded 66 points for third place, while the women's team produced 69 points for another third-place finish in the team standings on the day. In the total Nordic point section, the Nooks in fourth with 135 points.
The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's Nordic ski teams will be back in action tomorrow (Sunday), Feb. 12 for day two of the UAA Invitational at the Kincaid Trails in Anchorage.
